Sad Reminder
On the 28th of November in 2016, one of the greatest tragedies in the history of the Great Smoky Mountains area was set in motion. A massive forest fire was started by two teenage boys flipping matches into a water-starved forest along a trail five miles outside of Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Before the night was over, embers hurled high into the air leapfrogged from one fire ready area to another. Even though Gatlinburg was evacuated, fourteen people lost their lives, almost 18,000 acres were burned and some 24,000 buildings were damaged or destroyed. When the fires finally subsided two weeks later, devastation awaited those who came back to their homes and businesses. This photo of an incinerated bicycle taken in Gatlinburg shows a hint of the ravages to both the area in general and to someone, a child, in particular. The saddest part about all of this heartache, loss, and damage; it never had to happen at all.
